The Butter Tart Empire Bakery

If you have read my other blog posts, you probably know that I am not a big fan of sweets, but I do have a few exceptions that I enjoy once in a blue moon. Butter tarts are one of them. Yummm! The butter tarts sold in supermarkets are decent. Still, when you see people going to a butter tart bakery before 11 am in Roseneath, Ontario, you hear a little voice in your head say that you should follow suit (I wish that inner voice would also tell me when I should buy a lotto ticket 😂). This is how my husband and I discovered The Butter Tart Empire Bakery.
On The Butter Tart Empire Bakery’s website, it says their bakery is a testament to the belief that we truly “Deserve Butter” since they exclusively use real butter in their tarts and baked goods. They don’t use any lard, shortening, or margarine because they use “only the finest ingredients” in their 21 flavours of butter tarts. They also sell brownies, cookies, bars, and carrot cake – sweets galore!
The butter tarts cost $4 each or 6 for $23 so having never tried them before, my husband and I each ordered only one butter tart this first time around. I chose the Skor flavour. My husband chose Caramilk and also got a brownie, which cost $3.75. The Skor butter tart had a crème brûlée crunch and taste on top of a light butter tart filling and was enclosed by a delicious butter tart crust. The brownie was slightly crunchy on top and the fudgy centre was the perfect density. It wasn’t too sweet and had tiny pieces of walnuts, which added to the depth of its flavour.
The Butter Tart Empire Bakery makes the best butter tarts and brownies I have ever tasted. It has ruined supermarket butter tarts for me as I have higher standards now. If you are going to be in the Rice Lake area and this blog post has convinced you to give The Butter Tart Empire Bakery a try, just a heads up that they are closed Mondays to Wednesdays. Also, they don’t charge tax since it is a First Nation reserve. Thank you, inner voice. I’m glad I listened to you…
