The Roti Hut
351 Pitfield Rd, Scarborough, ON M1S 3E5
I used to work in Liberty Village and my favourite roti restaurants were the King St. West location of Island Foods and Gandhi Roti, both of which are now closed. 😢 Since I no longer work in that area, I wanted to find some good roti places further uptown and closer to where I live. Good thing the Greater Toronto Area has many restaurants that have good food of all ethnicities so it wasn’t difficult to find one.
One day a few years ago, my husband and I were talking about where we like to get roti from and he said he liked The Roti Hut, but his family always went there when he was young so he usually prefers getting food elsewhere. I often drive by the plaza it is located in near McCowan Rd and Sheppard Ave E when I visit my grandma who lives nearby, but I never really paid attention to what was there. The Roti Hut had been hiding in plain sight from me!
I decided to give The Roti Hut a try when I felt like eating roti one day. It was the first time I had seen jerk chicken roti on a menu (and who doesn’t like jerk chicken?) so that’s the one I went with. It was tasty and I would like to believe it is healthy so it was a great takeout choice. I would say my only minor gripe about jerk chicken roti is that it isn’t saucy enough. I am used to curry chicken and butter chicken roti so it wasn’t any fault of theirs.
Since then, my husband and I have been to The Roti Hut several times, although probably not as many times as I would like since he still prefers other food. I switched to getting the curry chicken (boneless) roti and have been getting it ever since. The roti itself is soft and not dry, like some other roti I have tried, and the curry chicken in it is tender, delicious, and saucy.
The Roti Hut has become one of my go-to roti restaurants as I’m sure it is for others as well since there is always a line-up there. Every time I drive past that plaza now, I point it out to whoever I’m with so it doesn’t go unnoticed for them as well. If you are in the area and feel like roti, I would suggest keeping them in mind. 🙂
