BLIK Bistro & Grill

Æðarhöfði 36, 270 Mosfellsbær, Iceland

I was looking forward to writing this blog post because it is another about Iceland and the food there (see my Fjallkonan blog post for the first one), which despite being expensive, was unexpectedly delicious. On our last day in Iceland, my best friend, our husbands, and I wanted to have fish and chips for lunch before we flew home since we didn’t have any thus far. A friend had suggested that when I went to Iceland, I should keep an eye out for fish and chips stalls along the highway because it was the best fish and chips he had ever had. Unfortunately, even though I kept both eyes open during our drive to the destinations on our itinerary, I didn’t see any so I had to use my trusty friend, Google, and found BLIK Bistro & Grill. They had fish and chips on the menu and were on the way to the airport after we visited Kerid Crater.

BLIK Bistro & Grill, located in Mosfellsbær, was spacious inside and had stunning views of the surrounding golf course, ocean, and the Snæfellsjökull glacier, which is visible on clear days. Despite that, it was their food that made me want to blog about them and this is a food blog after all… The four of us ordered a Baked Brie to share, and each couple got one order of the Fish & Chips in Beer Batter since we were worried the portions would be too large for one person to finish (thank goodness we did that because one order was more than enough for my husband and me).

The Baked Brie had honey and pecans, dried apricots on top, and berry jam on the side; it was nicely melted and flavourful. The Fish & Chips in Beer Batter was the best fish and chips I have ever had (sorry, Hutch’s on the Beach). The fries were tasty, and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The fish was tender, moist, meaty, and had a thin, crispy batter, and the three pieces of fish came with lemon, tartar sauce, and pickles. Even their tartar sauce, which had a lot of dill, was delicious. Last but not least, the pickles…need I say more? 😉

The meal I had at BLIK Bistro & Grill was my favourite one in Iceland, which says a lot since I liked all the food there. My only regret is not being able to find a fish and chips stall. If I ever go to Iceland again, that will be my mission, but it will take a lot to dethrone BLIK Bistro & Grill’s fish and chips from being the best in my eyes (and stomach).

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

If you plan on traveling to Iceland, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is a must-see attraction. It is located on the South coast of Iceland and is famous for its black sand beach. The beach is black due to the cooled lava from nearby volcanoes that flowed into the ocean during their eruptions, and then the lava fragments were broken down over time by the waves. Also, at Reynisfjara Beach are towering basalt columns (hexagonal rock formations formed by cooling lava), and a cave known as Halsanefshellir.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is breathtaking, but also dangerous due to the sneaker waves, which are massive waves that occur unexpectedly among smaller ones. These sneaker waves can drag you out into the Atlantic Ocean where the strong currents make it pretty much impossible to swim back to shore and the icy water will cause hypothermia. Therefore, you should stay a safe distance from the ocean and follow the safety signs they have posted. (Should I admit that I only found this out after we got home? 🫣 Good thing that even though the water reached us at times, we were able to run quickly back to the backshore…)

Hopefully, I haven’t scared you into not visiting Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, but if I have, maybe you will change your mind when you see the photos below of how beautiful it is. I have even had one of them as the wallpaper on my phone for the past 6 months. 😊
