Jersey Mike’s Subs

Submarine sandwiches have become one of my favourite foods, and my newest obsession is Jersey Mike’s Subs. I first discovered them when I was on a search for the best Philly cheesesteak and was disappointed that they were only in the U.S. at the time. Fast forward a few years, and here we are, currently with 40 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations in Canada (27 are in Ontario), and they are planning to open 300 locations across the country by 2034.

Ecstatically, I discovered there is a Jersey Mike’s Subs location near me a little over a month ago and have been getting their subs at least once a week ever since. I did say I was obsessed… So far, I have tried the California Chicken Cheese Steak, Big Kahuna Cheese Steak, Jersey Mike’s Famous Philly, Club Supreme, and Club Sub, and here are some of my experiences thus far:

• The Rosemary Parmesan bread is really good. It’s like eating a cheese bun, with a slightly crispy exterior, and the inside holds up well against the fillings and condiments.
• The chicken in their Chicken Cheese Steaks is tender and a good alternative to their more traditional Philly cheesesteak sandwiches made with beef.
• “The juice” is their red wine vinegar and olive oil blend, and although it tastes good, I find that it makes the sub soggy. I like to get their giant-sized subs so I can save half for the next day – around $11 + tax per meal is not bad.
• The Jersey Mike’s Famous Philly and Chipotle Cheese Steak have the same ingredients except the latter has chipotle mayo. You can add chipotle mayo to the Jersey Mike’s Famous Philly for free and save 20 cents. The same goes for the Chicken Cheese Steaks.
• If you order in person, you can add various toppings, such as pickles, jalapenos, hot peppers, and pepper relish, and change up the condiments, but there isn’t an option to do so via the Jersey Mike’s app. I highly recommend getting their app though and collecting points. I already have enough “Shore Points” to get a free giant sub.
• The Club Sub is my favourite Jersey Mike’s cold sub so far. I normally like just turkey breast, but I find their ham adds a slightly salty and additional flavour, and their applewood smoked bacon is delicious.
• The Big Kahuna is the sub I am going to rave about…it is the best Philly cheesesteak sandwich I have ever had (sorry, Charleys Philly Steaks), and my favourite Jersey Mike’s sub. The steak is cooked-to-order, thinly sliced, and tender. The American cheese, which this sub has extra of, adds a gooey, creamy taste, and the other toppings give it even more flavour.

As you can tell, I love Jersey Mike’s Subs. They bake their own bread, use fresh and quality meats and cheeses that are sliced right in front of you, and grill the meat and veggies for their hot subs to order on a flat-top grill. Other restaurants that serve Philly cheesesteaks need to take a page from Jersey Mike’s Subs (and Charleys Philly Steaks) because they have it down pat. So delicious!
